The Giant Tortoise

The giant tortoise is a species that inhabits the Galapagos. It can grow, at most, 4 feet long, and it can weigh, at most, 700 pounds. It has many recognized subspecies, each of which inhabits a different island and has a different appearance. Those that inhabit the larger, wetter islands are also larger, due to their dome-shaped shells that are better suited for the rainier weather. Those that inhabit the smaller, drier islands are also smaller, due to their saddleback-shaped shells that are better suited for the clearer weather.

The giant tortoise is classified as a Vulnerable species. It is this close to becoming extinct for two reasons. The first reason is that the dogs and cats that have been introduced to its habitat prey on its young. The second reason is that the cattle that have been introduced to its habitat eat the vegetation that it needs to survive.
