The Black Spider Monkey

The black spider monkey (also known as the Guiana spider monkey and the red-faced spider monkey; scientific name ateles paniscus) is a subspecies of spider monkey that inhabits the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests of the areas of eastern South America north of the Amazon River. It is one of the largest species of primate found in South America, standing between 16 and 24 inches tall, weighing between 15 and 19 pounds, and growing between 16 and 24 inches long in the body and between 24 and 32 inches long in the tail. It is one of seven subspecies of spider monkey found in Latin America.

The black spider monkey is classified as a Vulnerable species. It is this close to becoming extinct for two reasons. The first reason is that is being hunted. The second reason is that its habitat is being fragmented and destroyed. Because of this, the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF's) effort to save it consists of supporting the establishment and management of protected areas for it, as well as promoting responsible management of the parts of its habitat that are not protected. This is being done because it is essential to the continued health of the tropical rainforest environment, as it one of the main species that disperses seeds throughout this environment.
