The Sea Lion

The sea lion (scientific name zalophus wollebaeki) is a species that inhabits the sandy shores of the Galapagos. It grows 6 feet long, and it weighs around 400 pounds. It lives in large colonies that enter the waters next to its habitat whenever they need to eat or cool off.

The sea lion is classified as an Endangered species. It is this close to becoming extinct for four reasons. The first reason is that it is afflicted by the diseases it is catching from the species introduced to its habitat, such as dogs. The second reason is that the populations of the species of fish it eats are decreasing due to climate change. The third reason is that it gets entangled in fishing nets. The fourth reason is that it is severely injured by the barbwire barriers fishermen started putting up around their boats to prevent it from resting on them. Because of this, the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF's) effort to save it consists of building floating bases as alternatives for it to rest on.
