The Amur Tiger

The Amur tiger (scientific name panthera tigris altaica) is a subspecies of tiger that inhabits the temperate forests of the Amur-Heilong. It can grow up to 10 feet long, and it can weigh between 396 and 660 pounds. It is the subspecies of tiger with the largest habitat because prey densities are so low in its habitat that it has to travel far to find food. It is also the subspecies of tiger with the largest unfragmented population.

The Amur tiger is classified as an Endangered species. It is this close to becoming extinct for two reasons. The first reason is that it is poached for its body parts, as they are in demand on the black market. Because of this, one of the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF's) efforts to save it consists of reducing the illegal trade in its body parts by training and equipping the staff in its protected areas, as well as supporting antipoaching brigades and training customs agents in all of its habitat. The second reason is that its habitat is being destroyed as a result of fires, insufficient law enforcement, and conversion into mines, farmlands, and settlements. Because of this, another one of the WWF's efforts to save it consists of developing a network of protected areas for it, as well as sustainably maintaining much of its habitat, especially its Korean pine and Mongolian oak trees.
