The Sumatran Rhino
The Sumatran rhino (scientific name dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is a subspecies of Asian rhino that inhabits the dense lowland and highland tropical and subtropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It can stand between 3.3 and 5 feet tall, weigh between 1,320 and 2,090 pounds, and grow between 6.5 and 13 feet long. It is the smallest subspecies of rhino, as well as the only subspecies of Asian rhino with two horns. It is more closely related to the extinct woolly rhino than it is to any other still existing subspecies of rhino, as indicated by the long hair that covers its body. This hair is thick when it is a calf and a young adult, but thin when it is an older adult. It is also reddish brown in color when it is a young adult, but almost black in color when it is an older adult. It has three recognized subspecies, but only two (the eastern Sumatran rhino and the western Sumatran rhino) are believed to still be in existence.
The Sumatran rhino is classified as a Critically Endangered species. It is this close to becoming extinct for two reasons. The first reason is that much of Sumatra's Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, which is believed to house its largest population, is being converted into rice and coffee plantations. Because of this, one of the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF's) efforts to save it consists of working with officials in this park to halt this conversion, as well as to restore and preserve the park. The second reason is that much of its population is being poached for its horn, as demand for its horn is rising in countries such as Vietnam because their inhabitants believe that its horn can cure cancer. Because of this, another one of the WWF's efforts to save it consists of funding antipoaching patrols, monitoring illegal trade in its horn, and preventing the exploitation of it for international trade. All of this is being done because its protection also helps protect other species in most of its habitat.
